hiking

We walk a lot and often, even on road trips, but a hiking holiday is dedicated : hiking all day and every day. We’ve only done backpacking once, nowadays we prefer to pick a home base for a week or so and walk from there, sometimes taking the car to go to out-of-the-way spots.

Bavarian Forest – 2016

Our first snow holiday, the plan was to do nothing but hike all day. We stayed in Das Reiners hotel in Grafenau for 9 days and did day hikes in the neighbourhood. It had just snowed a lot the week before, but we mainly had clear sunny days.

Gérardmer – 2019

We rented a studio in a skiing town right before skiing season, not a lot of snow but to compensate: a lot of Netflix and home cooked food.

Black Forest – 2017

After the Bayern Forest in 2016 we got hooked on snow, so this year we drove down to the Black Forest in Germany and spent 9 days in Hinterzarten. We got lucky with the weather (again!) and spent most of our days in the forest, up to our knees in snow, mostly by ourselves.

Voeren – 2020

A brief getaway to the Voeren area in Belgium: just one night out but two great hiking days.

Limbourg – 2020

In the middle of a COVID-19 lock-down we spent a week in a holiday home in the northern Ardennes region. Restaurants, museums, castles, .. closed! So we hiked, cooked and watched Netflix/Disney+.
