We walk a lot and often even on road trips, but a hiking holiday is dedicated to it: hiking all day and every day. We’ve only done backpacking once, nowadays we prefer to pick a home base for a week or so and walk from there, sometimes taking the car to go to out-of-the-way spots.
Our first snow holiday, the plan was to do nothing but hike all day. We stayed in Das Reiners hotel in Grafenau for 9 days and did day hikes in the neighbourhood. It had just snowed a lot the week before, but we mainly had clear sunny days.
We rented a studio in a skiing town right before skiing season, not a lot of snow but to compensate: a lot of Netflix and home cooked food.
After the Bayern Forest in 2016 we got hooked on snow, so we this year drove down to the Black Forest in Germany and spent 9 days in Hinterzarten. We got lucky with the weather (again!) and spent most of our days in the forest, up to our knees in snow, mostly by ourselves.
A brief getaway to the Voeren area in Belgium: just one night out but two great hiking days.
